Vitamins and minerals refer to the healthy substances that we find in the foods we eat in our regular diet. These substances are needed by our body in order to build and maintain a healthy system all over. We get them naturally from our food. In fact, some of the foods offer more of these healthy substances, some offer less. About vitaminVitamins can be categorized under two heads; one is fat soluble and the other one is water soluble. Vitamin A, D, E and K are soluble in fat and can be stored within body. On the other hand, vitamin C and B complex are soluble in water. So it is needed for these vitamins to be dissolved into the water prior to their absorption within the body itself. Quite evidently, these vitamins can not be stored within our body. So any content of these vitamins if not used by the body is passed away through body along with bodily wastages. So your body needs a constant supply of these two vitamins in regular diet. About MineralWe all know that vitamins are derived from organic substances such as plants or animals, however, minerals are obtained from inorganic substances that essentially come from soil and water. These are either sopped up by plants or eaten by animals. We need minerals in larger amounts, especially for our growth and development. Calcium is such an essential mineral that we require in great amounts for bodily growth. Others are trace minerals such as zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, iron and selenium that our body requires in lesser amount on a regular basis. Food – the Fuel of GrowthOur body goes through continuous changes, both physically and psychologically. To stay healthy and to maintain a healthy balance throughout our life, the most essential thing that we need is food. Without food, we may not possibly be alive for too long period. There are a variety of foods rich in vitamins and minerals available that offer us support to grow, develop and maintain health. The best way to acquire healthy substances for our system is to eat healthy foods rich in vitamins and minerals. The foods with appropriate balance of carbohydrate, fats, protein and calories suffice the demand for optimum health. Whole or unprocessed foods such as fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, low-fat and low-cholesterol dairy products, whole grains, fishes contain the required nutrients that we need to keep ourselves healthy and stay fit. Basically, meats, fishes and poultry products are foods rich in vitamins and minerals that fulfill the overall demands for essential nutrients for achieving a healthy system. However, we need to be little selective while choosing foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Not all foods contain all the qualities. Say, for example, if you drink milk, you can have a good amount of vitamin D along with potassium, calcium and phosphorous. On the other hand, if you drink soda, it offers very little amount of minerals and vitamins. Some of us really get scared when the time comes discussing about healthy foods. It seems like a desperate compromise about taste and flavor of food. But in reality, the situation is quite opposing. You have the all flexibility to choose between delicious foods rich in vitamins and minerals if you love to eat fresh salads, vegetable pizza, lean meat sandwich or baked potato. These foods are indeed tasty, delicious and full of nutritional choices. However, if you are really serious about satisfying the bodily needs for vitamins and minerals and if you are planning to switch on considering different vitamin and mineral supplements available in the market, you are strongly recommended not to take any drastic action prior consulting with your doctor. It is true that vitamins and minerals are good for our health, but that does not necessarily imply that taking too much of these substance can offer you something better. Rather it is always good that you largely depend on a wide variety of healthy natural foods rich in vitamins and minerals. By: Dr John Anne Scottsdale Vitamin Manufacturing

A number of vitamins are said to have benefits for maintaining a healthy liver including Milk Thistle, Globe Artichoke, Dandelion Root and Liquorice Root. Many of these vitamin supplements come from the same family and have been used for centuries to improve the overall function of the liver and to protect the liver’s cells. Milk thistle is traditionally used as a detoxifying agent. It’s said to have protective effects on the liver and improve its function. It is typically used to treat cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis and gallbladder disorders and is said to function well as a ‘hangover cure’. Recommended dosage of Milk Thistle is 500mg per day. Globe Artichoke is said to protect the liver and stimulates the growth of new liver cells. It is often used in cases of liver damage and disease and comes from the same family as Milk Thistle. A daily dosage of 6000mg is recommended. Dandelion root assists in the overall function of the liver. It stimulates the production of bile by the liver which is used by the body to break down dietary fats. The recommended daily dosage of Dandelion root is 1000mg. Liquorice Root is often used to prevent liver toxicity at a dosage of 600mg per day. Whilst all of these nutrients and vitamins are said to have benefits for the liver, you should not under any circumstances substitute qualified medical advice with information found in this article. Vitamins like A, E, D and K are the vitamins to grow taller, which your body needs to increase in height. These Vitamins stimulate natural growth and you can increase height after puberty as well with their help. However, some vitamins are fat-soluble that are readily stored in your body and you need not take them regularly whereas some are water-soluble that you need to take everyday as these are daily excreted from the body. The former category includes vitamin C and eight varieties of Vitamin B whereas the latter category of fat-soluble vitamins includes vitamins like K, D and A. Vitamin A helps in increasing your height as it stimulates the production of human growth hormone that promotes growth cells in the body to increase height after puberty. The B-6 and D -vitamins to grow taller are ideal for your body to absorb more of calcium that is essential for the growth and development of bones, ligaments and muscles. If the bones increase in length, the ligaments and the muscles should also stretch to that length. Vitamin B-6 also provides flexibility to ligaments and muscles. On the other hand, calcium is also helpful in the production of growth cells in the body in conjunction with vitamin B-6, magnesium and zinc. Zinc is a veritable substance that repairs tissues and help the immune system to maintain growth metabolism. This way, your body develops healthy bones with the reproduction of the growth hormones that are absent in the body after puberty. The above-mentioned vitamins that help you to gain height are naturally present in most of the foods. Therefore, you should modify your diet to include these vitamins by consuming plenty of meat, vegetables and fruits. If your eating habits are fixed and you cannot change them, you may take supplements that include all these vitamins to grow taller. With a regular intake of these vitamins, it is definitely possible for you to increase height after puberty and improve your stature. By: Ram T Joshi Scottsdale Vitamin Manufacturing

Hair growth is more in the first 30-40 years of a person’s life and much slower after that. It is very difficult to ensure good hair growth throughout though a balanced and proper diet would go a long way in promoting hair growth. Hair growth may be affected due to several factors like neglect, external weather conditions, stress, prolonged illnesses or stress. Thin, brittle or split hair takes a long time to grow because it is not healthy. Hence, the best way to ensure good hair growth is to provide the body with the essential nutrients through the food we take. Hair growth depends very much on vitamins. The most important vitamins necessary for hair growth are: vitamin A (produces healthy sebum in the scalp), vitamin C (antioxidant), vitamin E (improves scalp circulation), Biotin (produces Keratin), Inositol (keeps hair follicles healthy), Niacin (promotes scalp circulation) and pantothenic acid, Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 that prevent graying and hair loss. The most common food-based sources of these vitamins are: citrus fruits, green vegetables, fruits like pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, potatoes, green peppers, vegetable oils, soybean, raw seeds, dried beans, wheat germ oil, brewer’s yeast, whole grains, eggs, liver, rice, milk, fish, turkey, chicken and red meat. There are hundreds of products in the market that promise to ensure good hair growth. These products contain the necessary vitamins, proteins and minerals that promote hair growth. They can be in the form of external applicants like oils, shampoos, conditioners and sprays or they can even be in the form of tablets or capsules suitable for internal ingestion. Products for external applications do not have a very durable effect while vitamin supplements in the form of capsules have a more lasting effect on the hair growth. Today, almost all hair care products advertise the presence of a necessary vitamin in their products that would make the hair thicker, stronger, longer, lustrous, and on the whole, healthier. Viviscal, Shen Min, Nu Hair, Hair Genesis, Fast Grow, Hair Formula 37, Follicare, Melancor and Advesia are some of the popular hair vitamin products available in the market today. There are several websites that provide information about hair vitamin products. There are also exclusive stores that specialize in hair vitamin products. However, it is better to consult a physician before using these products to understand the exact condition of the hair so that the right products can be used. Numerous studies and surveys have consistently shown that a majority of adults frequently eat foods that contain too little vitamin B-6 and vitamin E. We consume far too many calories, and too much total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Women frequently eat too little folic acid, iron, calcium, and zinc. This is why it is so important to take a multi-vitamin daily. The basic nutritional needs of men and women who smoke are similar to those who don’t use tobacco. However, conclusive evidence exists that smokers need much more antioxidant nutrients than non-smokers. Essentially, smokers need antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid), and vitamin E. It was once believed that beta-carotene was an attribute for non-smokers, but recent clinical studies have found that beta-carotene can actually be harmful to smokers’ health. Beta-carotene can be found in most multi-vitamins and an excess of beta-carotene is risky for good nutritional health. If you are a smoker and going to take a multi-vitamin, be sure it doesn’t list beta-carotene as one of the ingredients. Too many smokers have inadequate intakes of antioxidants. Smokers are reported to consume lower quantities of antioxidant nutrients than nonsmokers. Antioxidant nutrients have protective roles with regard to cancer, heart disease, cataract formation, cognitive (mind) dysfunction, and other diseases. Researches believe there is a balance between antioxidant protectors and components that promote oxidation in the body. This balance seems to be related to health or disease. Some components of cigarette smoke promote oxidation that provides high levels of oxidant stress. Free radicals, which also promote oxidation, are derived from tobacco. Cigarette smoke has been estimated to contain 1,000,000,000,000,000 free radicals per inhalation. These free radicals can oxidize the fat components of the body and this is quite harmful. For instance, cigarette smokers have lower vitamin C (natural antioxidant) intakes and plasma vitamin C levels than nonsmokers. The incidence of cancer, heart disease, and cataracts is lower in populations that have high intakes of fruits or leafy green vegetables, all replete with vitamin C. Smokers who ate foods containing more than 200 mg vitamin C daily had serum vitamin C levels equivalent to those of nonsmokers who consumed 60 mg or more of the vitamin, according to a recent national survey. The most recent edition of the Recommended Dietary Allowances recommends that regular cigarette smokers take in at least 100 mg of vitamin C daily. Smokers have been found to have higher levels of vitamin C in the lung tissues than nonsmokers. This clearly reflects a positive defense mechanism against the free radical species from cigarette smoke. Studies have found that smokers have a 30 percent lower vitamin C level than nonsmokers. Researchers believe that nicotine may interfere with vitamin C absorption. Nicotine boosts metabolic rate, therefore increasing the rate that vitamin C is metabolized. Individuals who smoke need 100 milligrams of vitamin C (versus 60 milligrams for nonsmokers) every day. The body’s most effective antioxidant is vitamin E. Smokers have been found to have lower levels of plasma vitamin E than nonsmokers. Smokers seeking nutritional supplementation should look for a multi-vitamin that contains at least all of the following: Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin E, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Niacin, Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), Zinc Picolinate, Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), and the antioxidant Co-Q10. Some supplements add Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Powder, Inositol, Rutin, Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex, Choline Bitartrate and PABA. If you smoke, or live with someone who smokes, it is important that you make the right choices to safeguard you health against the risks associated with smoking. One of the most important decisions you can make is choosing the right multi-vitamin. It’s a fact that smoking depletes the body of important nutrients. It’s also a fact that one nutrient, beta-carotene, has been found in clinical studies to adversely effect smokers’ health. Beta-carotene, a form of Vitamin A, can be found in most multi-vitamins. When you see information about vitamins, you often see the word ‘essential’ right before ‘vitamins’. Have you ever wondered why? It’s actually quite simple. Our bodies require vitamins and minerals to function at optimum efficiency. It’s interesting, then, that our bodies are incapable of producing most vitamins and minerals for themselves. Instead we have to source these necessary vitamins and minerals from outside sources. Vitamins occur naturally in many of the foods we at, as they are organic compounds. You can also get vitamins in the form of a vitamin supplement. A staggering thirteen vitamins are considered necessary to perform crucial functions in the body such as provide protection against infection and diseases, helping the body grow, helping the body’s metabolism and the removal of waste products. The body uses vitamins a little like building blocks. It puts all the different blocks together in different combinations to produce the hormones and enzymes that control things such as heart rate, glucose levels, blood pressure and other chemical reactions. Can I Have Too Many Vitamins? Over the years, guidelines for the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of each vitamin and mineral have been formulated. These take into account a person’s age, gender, and current state of health. A pregnant woman, for example, needs a certain combination of vitamins in order to protect the fetus from birth defects. An adult man requires different types and amounts of vitamins to an adult woman. Also, the nutritional requirements of children, teenagers and the elderly are quite different. Food basically acts like fuel for your body. If you give your body the best type of fuel it will be able to perform at optimum levels. Give it dirty or bad fuel, and you’ll begin to notice a decline in performance levels. What Happens If I Don’t Have Enough Vitamins? Vitamin deficiencies tend to grow over time, so the first signs may be hardly noticeable. However, down the road they can lead to serious health issues. Not enough people eat a nutritionally balanced diet nowadays. It’s common for adults to have very poor eating habits. Healthy, natural foods have been replaced by processed foods, high fat foods, fast food and restaurant food. Unfortunately we can’t take a look inside our body and see what exactly is going wrong in there thanks to our poor dietary habits. Most people don’t even think about what they’re eating until they start to put on excess weight and it becomes very noticeable. Excess weight is often one of the later signs, and by the time you notice the extra weight, there could already be serious trouble brewing inside. A lack of Vitamin C can lead to tiredness, weakness, sore muscles and bleeding gums. If you’re low on Vitamin D, you can end up with weak or possible even deformed bones. Not enough Vitamin E can cause the destruction of vital red blood cells. In extreme cases vitamin deficiencies can even lead to death. If you’re concerned you may be lacking some essential vitamins thanks to bad eating habits, than a vitamin supplement can be a good way to fill the gaps. The only way to know for sure if your body isn’t getting enough vitamins is to have a blood test. Generally, though, if you think you might not be getting enough vitamins, you’re probably right. Try a daily multivitamin supplement and you might just be surprised at how much better you feel overall. By: Tim Gorman Tempe Private Label Manufacturing
